Why we built MelanatedKindred
MelanatedKindred started as a directory and grew into a community. Supporting each other works better when we are actually connected, so a list of businesses was never going to be enough. We wanted a place where you can find a Black-owned business, follow it, and talk to the person behind it.
In the world of social media, a safe and caring place for Black people was missing. MelanatedKindred helps to fill that void.
What we hold to
Members do not pay to be here. Safety comes first, which is why posts and profiles are for signed-in members only. Businesses can promote themselves, and basic promotion is free for now. We are honest about being new, and we would rather grow carefully than fast.
Who is behind it
MelanatedKindred is owned and run by Waldington Industries, LLC.
Where we are starting
We are opening in Freeport and Rockford, Illinois first. The site is open to anyone, anywhere, and everything you need to know about how it works is on our how it works page.
